Who
we are.

positively african

We create content and curate events that celebrate African stories and heritage.

Using different mediums, from audio stories to theatre productions, we work with writers, storytellers, actors, publishers, illustrators, graphic designers, sound designers and musicians from across the continent on a range of projects with long-lasting social impact in the literary and performance space.

Our Projects

Books

We work with African writers and publishers to produce new and exciting African children’s content. So far, we have partnered with Pavaipo, Ouida Books, Book Dash and The African Storybook Project.

Theatre &
Performance

And Then She Said

A performance adaptation of five novels by African women with a stellar cast, including Mumbi Kaigwa, Sitawa Namwalie, Patricia Kihoro, Aleya Kassam, Raya Wambui and Maïmouna Jallow

The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives

A one-woman show by Maïmouna Jallow based on the novel by Lola Shoneyin. This show toured globally – Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt, UK, Scotland, Singapore, Chile, Poland, Finland and U.A.E.

The Door of No Return

When three orishas find a magical looking mask, they uncover a world destroyed by corruption and greed. Through their stories, they teach us that in order to own our future, we must remember our past. The Door of No Return is a performance adaptation of three folktales from the Story Story, Story Come anthology.

Shela’s Journey

When slave traders kidnap her parents, Shela sets off to find them. The journey takes her to the Caribbean and North America, where she discovers the truth about what happened to her people. A performance adaptation of Shela’s Journey from the Story Story, Story Come anthology.

Events

We hold an exciting range of events in partnership with both Kenyan and international artists.

We have held two editions of the Re-Imagined Storytelling Festival (2016/2018), with guest tellers and performers from Kenya, Sierra Leone, Morocco, South Africa, Australia and The Gambia.

Our storytelling; poetry and music events have featured some of the world’s finest artists, including Diane Ferlatte (USA); Jeff Gere (Hawaii); Mara Menzies (Scotland); Sanjally Jobarteh (Gambia); June Gachui (Kenya); Tetu Shani (Kenya); Ivan Irakoze (Kenya) and many more!

Workshops & School Programmes

Adult Master Classes
We organize a range of workshops and masterclasses for teachers, parents, thespians, hospitality staff and rights-based organisations on a variety of topics, including, How to tell a Good Story – The Art of Storytelling; Storytelling for Kids; and Adapting Novels for Performance.

School Programmes
We also organize storytelling performances and workshops at schools for both primary and secondary students.

We have partnered with various schools, institutions and festivals with children’s programs, including: Braeside School; Rosslyn Academy, Kenya National Library Services; Storymoja Festival; Somali Heritage Week; Sigana Storytelling Festival; Hargeisa International Book Festival, Edinburgh Storytelling Festival and the Singapore Storytelling Festival
